The Kingdom of Crystal
Enjoy a close-up view of skilled glassblowers transforming the syrupy molten glass into beautiful works of art. The sparks fly and there is a distinctive hissing sound as the hot molten glass is shaped by skilled hands using only wet newspaper.
T
here are 15 glassworks in the Kingdom of Crystal, all located in a short distance of each other in Kronoberg. These include several of the most famous glassworks of the world.
But the Kingdom of Crystal has more to offer: small studio glassworks, the Emigrant region, music festivals and a long and proud culinary tradition.
En smakbit av Ljungbys historia
From time immemorial people travelled past Ljungby alongside Lagan river. It was as early as in the 11th century, that two Vikings decided to settle down in the heatherclad flat country. These two Vikings were Astrad and his son Götrad, who are standing statue on Stora Torget (The Big Square in front of Terraza) in Ljungby.
-Here! said Astrad to Götrad, here we will settle down. There is a large game stock and game birds and in the river a lot of salmons. Let us build our own village (sv. by) here and since here is a lot of heather (sv. Ljung) let us call it Ljungby.
The two Vikings cultivated the land and become widely knpwn agriculturists. When Astrad died, his son erected a runic stone as a memory of his father. Today this stone is famouse as "Replösa stenen".
But there are other who claims, that the history of Ljungby does not begin until late in the 17th century, when a market place, court-house and a hostelry was built here. The latter was managed by the well known Märta Ljungberg (1657-1741) who offered food and lodging to those, who passed Ljungby. She managed the hostelry for 55 years and become a very rich woman. She made large donations to the poor and needy and after her death the fortune was left to them. A scolarship was founded in her name. Her generosity and devoution has been honored in several places in the town; amongst others there is a street named after her and her hostelry is still in excistence at the old square. There one can feel a touch of the old environment where Märta Ljungberg welcomed everybody with openness and sincerity to Ljungby.
It was also at the old square on a market day in 1857, that a few of the rich people in Ljungby, observed a young girl with a beautiful singing-voice. They were so deeply affected by her voice, that they decided to pay for her education. The girl was Kristina Nilsson and she became in time a very famous operasinger. A statue was erected in the park by the station and a scolarship was founded in her memory. This scolarship is given to a "prominent" musician or singer every year.
